Jon Lears earned a master’s degree in Psychology: Contemplative Psychotherapy from Naropa University in 2006, and he is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. He has more than ten years’ experience working with a broad variety of clients. Many of these years were devoted to working with individuals in the criminal justice system, both in and out of incarceration, who had various mental health diagnoses with co-occurring substance abuse disorders. Jon also has many years experience in working with individuals outside of the criminal justice system with various mental health challenges, addictions, and developmental disabilities, providing therapeutic services for them in their homes and in the community. Jon does both individual and group work, using various therapeutic modalities including contemplative psychotherapy, mind-body awareness practices: t’ai-chi ch’uan and shamatha-vipashyana meditation, humanistic psychology, motivational interviewing, and behavior analysis. Jon supports his clients in exploring difficult thoughts and emotions with an intention of developing a sense of curiosity and acceptance toward them, thus enabling his clients to cultivate acceptance and compassion toward themselves and others. Jon has assisted his clients in developing self-efficacy, enabling them to lead fulfilling, well-rounded lives by exploring and discovering passion, meaning, and purpose in their lives, along with helping them to pursue endeavors such as education, employment, volunteering, and learning basic life skills.
Jon lives with his wife and two children. In his spare time, Jon can be found enjoying time with his family, practicing t’ai-chi ch’uan, reading, and playing the piano.
